What is a Human Library?

A Human Library is a lot like your typical library. Readers come into the library, sign out books, read them and return them. However, in the Human Library, the books you sign out are real people, willing to share their unique perspectives, cultural histories, and experiences.

Instead of reading a book, you have a conversation. Human Books are often individuals who have been stigmatized, stereotyped or misunderstood in various ways.

Challenge your preconceptions and assumptions, broaden your awareness and understanding of others, and be curious! This is your chance to engage in an open conversation, to ask questions, to listen to life-stories and to learn about someone whose experience, background or viewpoint interests you.

How Does It Work?

Humber Libraries is having two Human Library Days, one at each campus.

  • The North campus day is Tuesday, February 2nd from 12:00 to 5:00 pm in the 7th Semester.
  • The Lakeshore campus day is Wednesday, February 3rd from 12:00 to 5:00 pm in the Lakeshore Library.

Human Books can be signed out for 30 minute intervals.

  • You can renew a Book after 30 minutes (unless the book has already been reserved), or sign out another Book of your choice.
  • You can have a one-on-one conversation with a Book, or you can get together in small groups (maximum 3 persons) to speak with a Book.
