Media Literacy Week

Media Awareness Network (MNet) and the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) are joining together to host Canada's fourth annual Media Literacy Week, November 2-6, 2009.

This year's theme – Media Literacy in the Digital Age – will emphasize the multiple literacy skills needed by today's youth for accessing, evaluating, repurposing, creating and distributing media content.

"Students need a whole new skill set to successfully navigate media content in the digital age," explains CTF President Emily Noble. "Although young people navigate easily through various media, they still require guidance and mentorship to develop the necessary critical thinking skills for active and engaged online citizenship."

Humber Libraries Health Sciences Librarian Nancy Pierobon participates in ORLN conference

In 2001 a group of Ontario college and university librarians met to establish the Ontario Learning Resources for Nursing (OLRN) group. Through this group's efforts, a comprehensive package of Nursing literature resources (e-journals/databases) was established to serve the educational needs of Bachelor of Nursing students in collaborative programs across Ontario.

Representatives from the OLRN group met in late 2009 and established a committee to review efficacy of the content, access and use of these resources. Nancy Pierobon, Health Sciences Librarian, was appointed a member of this sub-committee. She met with members from the University of Toronto, Nipissing University, Conestoga College, McMaster University, and the Bibliocentre during this past winter to; devise, disseminate, and review results of a Nursing resources survey; suggest new resources for the collaboration partners; and plan a conference to discuss "Collaboration, Scholarship and Inspiration" in Nursing education in Ontario. The conference was held on May 12th at the University of Toronto.

Deans, Associate/Assistant Deans, professors, and librarians from universities and colleges across Ontario met to discuss, among other topics:
- access to Nursing literature resources
- theoretical/research issues in Nursing education
- educational/teaching technologies,
- information literacy/fluency
- theoretical issues in Nursing educational collaboration
- collaboration between faculty and librarians

For more information check the conference's blog at http://olrn.blogspot.com/. All speakers' presentations will be available for viewing by the end of May 2009.
