Service Charter

The Library has created a Service Charter which outlines our commitment to students and our goal to provide services that are welcoming, equitable, and accessible to everyone.

Our Policies and Procedures Review Committee is reassessing library policies with an EDI lens. The Committee’s role is to promote a diverse and inclusive environment through its policies, their implementation, and to provide equitable access to the collections, technology, and spaces.

LEAP

LEAP is a College Libraries Ontario (CLO) initiative supported by the Ontario Colleges Library Service (OCLS). LEAP is a self-audit tool library staff at participating institutions use to evaluate the accessibility of library e-resources. Completed evaluations are entered into a repository of accessibility assessment reports.

Library staff can review the reports as they make acquisition decisions, support library users, and advocate for e-resource publishers to continually improve their accessibility features. Humber participates in LEAP by conducting accessibility assessments and adding them to the repository.

Accessible Content ePortal (ACE)

Humber Libraries is a part of the Accessible Content ePortal (ACE), which contains alternative formats of the print book collections of participating Ontario colleges and universities. Content is made available to students with print disabilities in these formats: Colour PDF, B&W PDF, DAISY, TXT and ePub. ACE is managed by Scholars Portal, a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries.

Closed Captioning & Transcripts

In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), videos hosted on Humber Libraries video portal, Panopto or in the DVD collection are either closed captioned or accompanied by transcripts when closed captioning is unavailable.

Fines & Loan Periods

Humber Libraries has made two major changes to our borrowing policies to move toward barrier-free access for our communities:

  1. Overdue fines are no longer charged for all general collection items including books, ESL materials, children's books, leisure reads, plays, sheet music, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records.
  2. Loan periods on all general collection items have been extended to semester loans (14 days after the last day of classes) for all print materials and 14-day loans for all media items.

Book Request & Delivery Service

The Book Request and Delivery Service (BRADS) provides current students, faculty, and staff access to books from the print library collection without having to visit the library in-person.

Offered by the Humber and University of Guelph-Humber libraries, this service is available at no charge to support studying and teaching needs for those who are currently studying/working remotely or unable to visit campus.

Print items can be shipped directly to library users within Ontario at no cost when available.
