Food & Drink and Noise Policies

The purpose of Library & Learning Commons’ Food & Drink and Noise policies is to provide a comfortable, positive, and welcoming environment for everyone using our spaces. We recognize the importance and benefits that nourishment provides while studying and the importance of conversation and quiet contemplation while learning. The core of our Food & Drink and Noise policies is YES.

  • YES to Food & Drink: All members of the college community are welcome to enjoy food and covered drinks, except in designated areas.
  • NO to Garbage: Everyone is responsible for disposing of their garbage and recyclables.
  • YES to moderate and low volume level conversations: All members of the college community are expected to speak quietly and use audio devices with headphones.
  • NO to excessive loud noise: Everyone is expected to speak or listen at a volume that shows respect for other people in the space.

Library Displays

The Library curates creative and inviting displays of library materials that reflect the diversity of members and viewpoints of our community. By highlighting diverse collections in book and DVD displays we are providing users with additional opportunities for accessing information and education.

Library Spotlights

Members of the Library’s Marketing Team regularly develop content for the Library Spotlight section on the library homepage. Spotlight blog posts promote resources and services, and prominently profile resources related to EDI topics, voices, events, and notable days.

Creating an Indigenous Space

Together with Indigenous Education and Engagement (IE&E), the Library has installed two display cabinets that will showcase the Library’s Indigenous collections, promote events held by the Indigenous Education and Engagement Centre, and include a variety of traditional and everyday objects important to Indigenous life. The contents of these cabinets are dynamic. We are also working with IE&E to have Ojibwe artist Patrick Hunter paint columns in the North library.

In 2022, Humber Libraries and IE&E collaborated with Ojibwe artist Patrick Hunter to paint four pillars in the North library. The colours used in the design represent the four colours of the medicine wheel.

Adaptive Technology

There are two adaptive technology rooms in Library spaces, one at the Lakeshore Library and one at the North Learning Commons. The North room offers ten PC computers and the Lakeshore room offers one Optelec and three PC computers. Both locations are equipped with Read & Write, Kurzweil 3000, Jaws, and Zoomtext software.

Printer Access

Height-adjustable print release stations were installed in the North and Lakeshore Libraries and Learning Commons spaces in 2017 to facilitate access for all.
